Amb. Albert M. Muchanga, born on May 21, 1959, a Zambian national was elected as the new Commissioner for Trade and Industry of the African Union Commission. Mr. Muchanga was the Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office in charge of Parliamentary Affairs in Zambia. H.E. Muchanga was also a former Ambassador to Ethiopia with extra accreditation to the African Union. He has both at home and abroad dealt with issues broadly related to international economic policy analysis and implementation as well as regional integration, foreign policy analysis and implementation.

Highly passionate about Mining and the Natural Resources industry, Michelle remains focused on helping mining to evolve through digital transformation and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, to help deliver sustainable solutions to the sector. Michelle is also the Chair of the Global Mining Guidelines Group and has contributed to develop best practices and guidelines for the implementation of technology and socially enabled changes in the mining industry. Previously she was Chief Innovation Officer at Barrick Gold Corporation where she oversaw the company’s innovation program, looking both at how innovation can drive productivity in the existing business as well as how it can be harnessed to deliver alternative business models. She holds a degree in Civil Engineering and an Executive MBA from the Melbourne Business School; as well as a degree in Psychology from Deakin University.
Johan Ferreira

Johan Ferreira has 35 years’ of experience in the mining industry. His experience includes strategic executive leadership roles together with a managerial execution track record of global / international assignments. Over and above his leadership and rigorous operational experience, his areas of expertise include: mine design, project management, the turning around of businesses / operations and commissioning of mining projects. Johan started his mining career in 1986 with Anglo American as a Learner Official and progressed to the level of Senior Vice President Operations - South Africa Region, which later operated as AngloGold Ashanti. Prior to joining Khoemacau, Johan was the Regional Senior Vice President - Africa Region for Newmont, based in Ghana. During his four year tenure with Newmont, he had many successes. Apart from dealing with complex internal and external stakeholder relationships, infrastructure challenges, and new project development, Ghana was one of Newmont’s top performing operating divisions under Johan’s leadership. Johan holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) degree from the University of Pretoria and is a qualified and registered Professional Engineer. Johan assumed the role as CEO of the Cupric group, which owns and operates Khoemacau, in October 2018.

Women in Mining South Africa

Noleen is a geologist with more than 20 years’ experience in multi-commodity mineral exploration and evaluation of gold, platinum, chrome, iron and coal exploration projects throughout Africa and gold exploration in South and Central America, based in Peru. Noleen has been involved with Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA) since its inception in 2010 and has filled most of the portfolios. She was the chairperson from January 2014 to December 2016. She is an active mentor to young females in the mining industry and vocal through media and conference presentations of the need for role models in this male dominated industry. These include the 2014 South Africa Mining Lekgotla, the United Nations’ African Women Business Linkages Forum in Kenya, Mines and Money in London and the Mining Indaba in Cape Town. Noleen was named one of the Top 10 Global Inspirational Women in Mining for 2016.

She joined the Identity group in August 2010 as the senior associate and finance executive at Identity Capita lPartners (Pty) Ltd. Prior to joining Identity Capital Partners, Mametja worked in the Morgan Stanley investment banking team from September 2007 to March 2010 covering the South African, Zambian and Nigerian Mergers & Acquisitions and equity capital markets; mainly working in the mining industry. During this period she led teams in the execution of transaction of over $4 Billion. Mametja also worked at UBS South Africa (2006 to 2007) covering the South African Mergers and acquisitions

Kgosi Marata has over 11 years experience in the mining industry, predominantly in the open pit environment. He is currently serving as the Senior Contracts Manager for Basil Read Mining Botswana and has recently been appointed as a Director and board member of B&E Botswana (PTY) Ltd (a subsidiary of Basil Read Mining). Kgosi has been involved in the development and growth of projects in the SADC region across a number of commodities and metals such as diamonds, copper, zinc, silver and coal. His areas of focus are in operations management and business development with focus on turnkey projects delivering value for customers. A fully registered Engineer under the Engineers Registration Board of Botswana, he holds a BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, an MDP from the University of Stellenbosch and a Diploma in Project Management from PPM College. He is also a member of the Botswana Chapter of the Project Management Institute where he is currently pursuing his full Certification as a Risk Management Professional.

Responsible for Women in Mining programme at Minerals Council South Africa. She had the honour of being named as one of the Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining in 2018.

Andries is PwC’s Africa Energy, Utilities and Resources leader and an experienced JSE accredited audit partner. He has been with the firm since 1997 and partner since 2007. He has a specific focus on mining clients across commodities and mining methods. Andries is the project leader for the firm’s SA Mine and Global Mine publications which gives him excellent insight into industry wide issues. In his previous role, he’s served in senior and executive leadership roles for multinational companies for its African subsidiaries and was responsible for the company’s increasing development and expansion efforts into high growth and domestic markets. Simon Kwete specializes in heavy mining engineering and brings forth close to 14 years of experience in mining systems automation and control. Simon’s passion for technological advances has afforded him opportunities where he’s been instrumental in the deployment and delivery of the first Autonomous Blast hole drill roll out in Africa and the very first power system AC dragline. Simon is an electro-mechanics graduate, business studies and currently completing a Post graduate Diploma in Energy Leadership with the University of Witwatersrand with a focus on Energy decarbonization, sustainable energy and green manufacturing.

As compliance cluster lead of the China Law and Development Project at Oxford University, she researches China's compliance with international investment laws. She currently serves as the Chair of the New York State Bar Association's Energy and Natural Resources Committee, as an Advisory Member of Persistent Energy and board of the ideo.org. She previously served as an Advisory Board member of ARCH Africa Renewable Power Fund.

He is an international speaker with a particular focus on investments in the mining and energy sector. He contributes various media and forums such as the BBC, Africa Mining Forum, European Mining Convention among others. He recently featured in the Energy DRC report produced by Africa Oil and Power in collaboration with the African Energy Chamber. Furthermore, Mr Chovu is assisting the office of AGOA DRC in shaping strategies for the improvement of the DRC business climate and to help attract US investments. Prior to this, he was the Executive Chairman of Universal Coal, during which time he listed the company raising $20 million. As President and CEO, Tony also listed Africo Resources on the TSX raising $20 million in the process to develop copper and gold assets in Africa. Tony served as VP Global Generative Exploration at Placer Dome Inc., a major Canadian gold miner for 8 years. He has been a non-executive director of various Canadian listed companies, including; Endeavour Mining, Adamus Resources, Auryx Gold, African Gold, and Lapplandgold miners (NordX). She transitioned from law into Corporate Finance at Standard Bank, becoming the Head: Mining & Metals, and focusing on complex transactions incorporating multiple investment banking products, including advisory, equity capital markets, debt capital markets, and lending. Sandra joined EY in 2020 as a Partner and the Lead for M&A Advisory in Africa, where she advises clients in a range of industries on transactions.

Mr Holland is a co-founder of Cobre, and is the founder and former CEO of ASX listed Lithium Power International Limited (ASX: LPI). Mr Holland listed LPI in 2016 and raised in excess of $70 million in new equity; and acquired, explored and developed one of the world’s highest grade and largest lithium mines in Chile. Mr. Holland is also an Executive Director of OzAurum Resources Limited (ASX: OZM) and is the Chairman of Sydney-based private investment company, Holland International.

Xavier has a MSc in Engineering Geology UMSA; Diploma in Mining and Exploration from the Montan University, Leoben, Austria, Graduate Diploma in Engineering and MSc. Mining Engineering from Wits. He has been in coal since 1977, established the Geological Survey’s National Coal Database (NCDB); was Genmin IT Exploration Manager and joined the Minerals Bureau, DME in 1995, as Chief Mineral Economist; Coal and Hydrocarbons. He was appointed Coal Senior Analyst, Wood Mackenzie, Southern Africa and since 2009 is consulting privately with XMP Consulting. He promotes South Africa’s coal mining industry within government and industry groups, lectures at Universities as well as companies on coal science, i.e. coal reserves, economics, quality control, marketing and clean coal technologies. He has extensive experience in reserves and resources. His main tasks are optimisation of coal utilisation and marketing, economic empowerment in coal, evaluation of coal reserves, implementation of clean coal technologies (CCTs) and impact of the use of fossil fuels. Xavier belongs to several local and international coal committees and groups involved in coal science and technology.

Jacques Badenhorst is a metallurgist with over 25 years’ experience in operations and project development management of diverse mining projects, ranging from coal, gold and manganese to titanium and diamond. He is a co-founder of Maatla Energy and responsible for implementing the coal business as the Chief Executive Officer. He has been the Managing Director of the ASX-listed Zamanco Minerals Limited and the mineral processing company MRD. He is a member of the South African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy, the Mine Metallurgical Managers Association and the Institute of Directors SA. In the past, Jacques has worked for Grinaker / LTA Process Engineering, Anglo-American Corporation and MRD, implementing and operating various medium- and large-scale mineral projects.

Georgette B. Sakyi-Addo is the current President of the Association of Women In Mining in Africa. Selected as a Global Inspirational Woman in Mining by WIM UK (2016). In 2020 she was awarded a DSc. Honoris Causa by the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana. This was in recognition of her 26 years of entrepreneurship in the Mining Industry in West Africa, and advocacy for women in the extractive industry in Africa. In 2018, she was awarded Female Entrepreneur of the Year by Invest in Africa (IIA), a non-profit championing African-owned SMEs across the continent. She is a mining entrepreneur and has established her own locally-owned Mining & Exploration supplies company, Georgette Barnes Ltd. Georgette has completed post graduate Certificate in Mining Law & Policy (UG), Principles of Mining Engineering and Surface Mining Operations at UMaT. She established and volunteers for Women in Mining - Ghana and The Accra Mining Network. Interests include local content, socio economic linkages & governance in the mining sector.
Morné du Plessis

Morné is a South African citizen but is resident in Botswana and is a chartered accountant with an MBA from Heriot Watt University Edinburgh, Scotland. He has extensive experience in the mining industry including having been CFO of several mining groups, such as domestic coal trader MacPhail, contract mining and beneficiation service provider Genet SA, junior coal miner Umcebo Mining Group, and JSE-listed junior coal miner Wescoal Holdings Limited. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of Minergy in January 2017 as its CFO in February 2017. On 1 August 2019 he took over the reigns as Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of the Group.

Dalu is currently Executive Chairman of Letaba Elihle Investments, a mining investment and advisory company based on an owner-operator model. He also sits on the boards of other unlisted mining and exploration companies. He holds hold the following qualifications: BSc.Eng (Mining), MBA (Wits), Pr. Eugene graduated with a B.Tech degree in metallurgical engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology in 1997 and subsequently worked as metallurgist, senior metallurgist and operations manager at various companies including Samancor Chrome and Impala Platinum. During this time he also obtained an MBA from North West University. Since 2005 he has been consulting to the minerals beneficiation industry throughout Africa and the Middle East. Currently he is CEO at Vanadium Resources (VR8) who are in the process of furthering the Steelpoortsdrift Vanadium project. As a registered Pr. Tech. Eugene was intimately involved with preparing the recent scoping study results of VR8 and is spearheading the completion of the company’s feasibility studies towards production of high purity vanadium pentoxide from the Steelpoortdrift Vanadium project in Limpopo, South Africa. Petro du Pisani is Head of Business Improvement at Anglo American Platinum and the current chairperson for Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA). Before joining Anglo American Platinum she was Head of Business Improvement Projects at Anglo American where she supported the implementation of Anglo American’s Operating Model and various business improvement initiatives across Platinum, Coal South Africa, Kumba Iron Ore and De Beers Canada. She has worked in the Mining Industry for over 25 years. She was a Gencor bursar and as a graduate worked across the world as an exploration geophysicist. Petro has worked as a geoscience consultant, geophysics researcher and has for the past 13 years at Anglo American transitioned from a technical specialist into Business Improvement. In 2018 she formed part of Anglo American’s Elimination of Fatalities task force. Petro holds BSc degrees in Mathematics and Geophysics, and an MSc in Earth Science Management from the University of Pretoria. She is currently completing her executive MBA through the University of Cape Town.

Less than 2 years from acquiring the Cote d’Ivoire projects, Exore was acquired by Perseus Mining Ltd in September 2020 for a value circa of $80 million by way of a Scheme of Arrangement. Prior to Exore, he founded Renaissance Minerals Limited and listed it on the Australian Securities Exchange in June 2010 and served as Managing Director until its takeover by Emerald Resources NL in November 2016. During that time, Mr Tremain oversaw Renaissance’s growth as first mover into the frontier jurisdiction of Cambodia and successfully defined a highly economic +1 million ounce JORC gold resource and completion of a feasibility Study. Upon completion of the Emerald takeover, Mr Tremain joined the Board of Emerald as an Executive Director and remained in that role until January 2018.
