Security across Africa’s borders has evolved unimaginably; from early independence disputes to becoming a major source of conflict and instability whether it’s transnational organized crime groups trafficking arms, drugs, illicit goods, and human beings, or complex security threats such as violent extremism and terrorism. Especially at a time where borders have never been so restricted (pandemic), effective land, air, and maritime border security and management is critical for ensuring international security and economic growth. Panellists discuss what can be done to breakdown border control barriers such as limited regional cooperation and information-sharing, corruption, insufficient use of technology, databases and biometric data systems, given their importance to long-term stability and health.
