The Department is also responsible for implementing initiatives such as Accelerating Industrialisation of Africa (AIDA) and the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), which promote transparency, social responsibility and tax compliance in the extractive industry. The Department has three divisions: Trade; Industry; and Customs Cooperation.

The Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) located in Palapye, Botswana, and since 2016, is wholly owned by the Mineral Development Company Botswana (MDCB). Prior to this, MCM was owned and operated by Debswana. It was founded in 1973 by Anglo American Corporation to supply Anglo’s then copper and nickel mining and smelting assets at BCL in Selebi Phikwe. MCM operations have expanded considerably since then to supply regional power plants and industries, especially the nearby Morupule Power Stations owned by the national utility, Botswana Power Corporation. MCM successfully undertook a major expansion project in the years 2008 to 2011, MCM1 Expansion, increasing run of mine coal production from 1mtpa to 2.8mtpa. The mine is undergoing another expansion, Project Motheo, that will consolidate and further grow its regional footprint. Project Motheo also creates a platform that will enable future supplies into offshore markets.

We offer asset, contract and capital finance for businesses active in the mining industry. The fund was registered on the 24th of March 2017 as part of a Youth in Mining Empowerment strategy by the founding directors, Dr Sakhile Ngcobo, Dr McEdward Murimbika, Olebogeng Sentsho and Peace Ntuli. The enormity of the impact of the mining industry in Africa is the primary rationale for the establishment of this fund. Simba Mgodi means “power in the mines” in Shona and by investing in the economic muscle of the mining sector, we will catalyse widespread economic growth and inclusive and equitable sharing in our resource base.
