Session 3: Coal
Much of the world’s growth over the past two hundred years has been due to the ever-increasing use of affordable energy derived from fossil fuels led by coal, followed by oil, and natural gas. Affordable hydrocarbons and predominantly coal-fuelled energy drove industrial expansion, created millions of jobs, and generated wealth for a large portion of the global population.  However, the recent decades discussion has been led by a largely pseudo-scientific approach first to a ‘Global Warming’, then renamed Climate Change and the proposed dangers of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) released from fossil fuel combustion around the world, in particular from coal.  Now, in 2022 suddenly, with the world facing the realisation that the ‘Green Energy’ transition to a renewable base-load is not achievable in short term (by 2040?) and a growing ‘energy cliff’ of lack of availability and inflation, the political narrative has dramatically changed its tune.
