The Project lies adjacent to Botswana’s main North-South infrastructure corridor that includes a sealed all-weather highway, railway line and the national power grid, all of which make significant contributions to keeping the capital cost of future developments low. A Mining Licence was granted on 12 September 2016 and A-Cap plans to time construction to fully capitalise on an expected recovery in the uranium price. Currently A-Cap are optimising technical aspects of the mining and processing plan, following spatial studies identifying acid consuming ores. The optimisation studies aim to reduce overall acid consumption and operating costs.

African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC) UNECA and AUC

The mission of the Centre is to work with member States and their national and regional organisations to promote the transformative role of mineral resources in the development of the continent through increased economic and social linkages. A key objective of the Centre is to ensure that Africa’s interests and concerns in this lucrative sector are properly articulated and internalized throughout the continent, for the benefit and prosperity of all.

Africa is well endowed with mineral resources and has a long history of mining, but has so far not reaped the developmental benefits from these resources. This is largely due to the weak integration of Africa’s mining sector into national economic and social activities. The African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government have taken deliberate steps to address this weakness, through the endorsement of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) and the establishment of the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) to provide strategic operational support for the Vision and its Action Plan. If well managed, Africa’s mineral endowments can lift the continent out of poverty and catapult it to growth, development and prosperity for all – this is the ultimate purpose of the African Mining Vision.

Botswana Diamonds plc
Botswana Diamonds plc

Botswana Diamonds plc (‘BOD’) is a diamond exploration and project development company whose origins lie in African Diamonds plc (‘AFD’) who were the original developers along with De Beers of Lucara Diamond’s Karowe Mine, which is famous for its production of large, high-value diamonds. Our focus is the identification of new diamondiferous kimberlite opportunities by securing high potential ground in the most prospective diamond provinces of Africa and leveraging our extensive African experience and diamond knowledge through partnerships with like-minded companies.

Location is key to improving the odds of discovery in any exploration programme: one must explore where diamonds are most likely to be found, i.e. in geologically prospective areas and preferably in the vicinity of known economic diamond deposits. Brownfields projects are the most logical place to start from. This is why we have been actively exploring in Botswana and have recently expanded our exploration footprint beyond the Botswana border, into South Africa. The board is chaired by Dr John Teeling and James Campbell is the Managing Director.

Mining Dialogues 360° (MD360°) is a multi-stakeholder platform for integrated, empirically-informed agenda-setting for sustainable development in mining. It has come to be known as a convener of evidence-based dialogues involving all industry actors. Its founding dialogue in June 2012 looked at the ‘Rise of Resource Nationalism’ and was based on a comparative study of the legal frameworks and political environments across the world. Since then there have been many other dialogues all focused on issues of concern to the industry, most especially on socio-economic development and establishing meaningful engagement with mine affected communities. MD360° is currently driving a technology based research programme, the SETI Project, to develop an intuitive, interactive platform that will allow all stakeholders to engage and share knowledge to improve decision making for positive sustainable impact. MD360° contends that it is possible to dramatically improve development planning frameworks, the impact of investments and especially the efficacy of social spending in mining areas by utilizing innovative technology in data gathering, information management and analysis. Advances in big data processing power and machine learning technologies, offer an opportunity to accelerate and deepen understanding of complex, interconnected issues and enable problem solving at a scale not conceivable before.
