The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is a an ‘AAA’ rated regional multilateral development finance institution, established in 1963, with a mandate to further the economic development and social progress of its regional member countries (RMCs), individually and collectively, in order to reduce poverty. 80 member countries, including all the 54 African countries, and 26 non-African countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia own the Bank. To fulfil its mandate, the AfDB’s key functions include: (i) using its resources for the financing of investment projects and programmes relating to the economic and social development of its RMCs; (ii) the provision of technical assistance for the preparation and execution of development projects and programmes; (iii) promoting investment of public and private capital in Africa for development purposes; and (iv) to respond to requests for assistance in coordinating development policies and plans of RMCs. The AfDB places special emphasis on promoting regional integration, developing fragile states, developing the agriculture value chain and establishing food security, and promoting capability development of women and girls in Africa.

It assists in creating a secure environment for political processes and support humanitarian, early recovery and stabilisation activities. In addition, AMISOM also supports SSFs to combat and degrade al-Shabaab terrorist group and other armed opposition groups, secure main supply routes and population centres. G5 Sahel

The G5 Sahel group was set up by Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger to address the many challenges to peace, security and development in the region. This organization has its head office in Nouakchott (Mauritania) and its military command base in Mali. Its Special Force (The G5 Sahel Joint Force) is mandated by G5 Sahel members, African Union and the United Nations Security Council to combat terrorism and international organized crime in the region. Working collectively to provide an appropriate response is essential to avoid such issues having a more negative impact on international peace. Therefore, the G5 Sahel Joint Force already collaborates particularly with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and France’s anti-insurgent Operation Barkhane.

The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) works toward reducing risks to communities stemming from explosive ordnance, with particular focus on mines, cluster munitions, other explosive remnants of war and ammunition storages. The Centre helps develop and professionalise the sector for the benefits of its partners: National and local authorities, donors, the United Nations, other international and regional organisations, non-governmental organisations, commercial companies and academia. It does so by combining three distinct lines of service: field support and capacity development and advice, multilateral work focused on norms and standards, and research and development focused on cutting-edge solutions.

Established in January 2019 within the GICHD, the Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT) is a shared initiative of the GICHD and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). AMAT is the response to the urgent need for practical, authoritative and sustainable support to States in the safe, secure and effective management of ammunition, in accordance with the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG). AMAT works to strengthen the capacities of States to improve the safety and security of national ammunition stockpiles, thus contributing to the global reduction of the risk of accidental explosions and illicit diversion.

At UNMISS, UNPOL works to protect civilians by providing a safe and secure environment for South Sudanese people who have fled violence and sought sanctuary at Protection of Civilian (PoC) sites with the aim of ensuring durable peace across the country. Police officers also support efforts to prevent sexual and gender-based violence and to promote human rights by engaging directly with the communities they serve.

UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA)

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established by Security Council resolution 2100 in 2013. The mission supports political process and carries out a number of security-related stabilization tasks, with a focus on major population centres and lines of communication, protecting civilians, human rights monitoring, the creation of conditions for the provision of humanitarian assistance and the return of displaced persons, the extension of state authority and the preparation of free, inclusive and peaceful elections. The mission operates under robust rules of engagement to address all threats to civilians and at times, in coordination with the Malian defence and security forces.
